PONY84 è una groovebox che gira nel browser: 6 tracce con motori FM e sampler, sequencer a 16 step con parameter lock e probabilità, pad da suonare, effetti di performance e un mixer con bus ed effetti. Funziona sul telefono, sul tablet e sul PC, senza installare niente.

PONY84 is a groovebox that runs in your browser: 6 tracks with FM and sampler machines, a 16-step sequencer with parameter locks and probability, playable pads, performance effects and a mixer with buses and effects. It works on phone, tablet and computer, with nothing to install.

01Prima di iniziareBefore you start

Browser: usa Chrome (Android, Windows, macOS, Linux). Anche Edge va bene. Su iPhone l'audio funziona, il MIDI no.
Accensione: al primo avvio tocca ACCENDI. I browser fanno partire l'audio solo dopo un tocco.
Volume: sul telefono alza il volume dei contenuti multimediali. Le cuffie con il filo hanno meno ritardo di quelle Bluetooth.
Come un'app: in Chrome apri il menu ⋮ e scegli Aggiungi a schermata Home. PONY84 si aprirà a tutto schermo come un'app.

SALVATAGGIO

Ogni modifica viene salvata in automatico nel browser, WAV compresi. Per avere una copia di sicurezza o per passare il progetto su un altro dispositivo usa Esporta.

Browser: use Chrome (Android, Windows, macOS, Linux). Edge works too. On iPhone the audio works, MIDI does not.
Power on: on first launch tap ACCENDI (power on). Browsers only start audio after a tap.
Volume: on a phone turn up the media volume. Wired headphones have less delay than Bluetooth ones.
As an app: in Chrome open the ⋮ menu and choose Add to Home screen. PONY84 will open full screen like an app.

SAVING

Every change is saved automatically in the browser, WAVs included. For a backup, or to move a project to another device, use Export.

02L'interfacciaThe interface

In alto

PONY84 ▾ apre il menu PROGETTO & MIDI.
SEQ MIXER ROLL cambiano vista. Sul telefono puoi anche fare swipe verso destra: SEQ → MIXER → ROLL → SEQ.
TAP imposta il tempo battendo a ritmo, ■ ferma e riporta all'inizio, ▶ avvia o mette in pausa.

Il display

Mostra il pattern in uso, la modalità attiva, i BPM (trascinabili su e giù), la traccia selezionata e lo step che sta suonando. A destra compaiono swing, scatter attivo o lo step in modifica.

Telefono, tablet e PC

Sul telefono vedi una vista alla volta. Su tablet in orizzontale e su PC (da circa 900×600 pixel) SEQ, ROLL e MIXER sono affiancati e il display si allarga in alto.

Top bar

PONY84 ▾ opens the PROJECT & MIDI menu.
SEQ MIXER ROLL switch views. On a phone you can also swipe right: SEQ → MIXER → ROLL → SEQ.
TAP sets the tempo by tapping along, ■ stops and rewinds, ▶ plays or pauses.

The display

Shows the current pattern, the active mode, the BPM (drag it up or down), the selected track and the playing step. On the right you see swing, the active scatter or the step being edited.

Phone, tablet and computer

On a phone you see one view at a time. On a landscape tablet or a computer (from about 900×600 pixels) SEQ, ROLL and MIXER sit side by side and the display widens at the top.

03Tracce e motoriTracks and machines

Ci sono 6 tracce. Tocca una traccia per selezionarla, poi scegli il suo motore nella riga MACHINE. Ogni traccia può usare qualsiasi motore: puoi avere anche sei KICK diverse. Cambiando motore le manopole tornano ai valori di partenza e i p-lock di quella traccia vengono azzerati.

I motori KICK, SNARE, METAL e PERC sono voci FM a due operatori; SYNTH è il motore melodico con quattro modelli; SAMPLE suona un file audio. Le manopole si girano trascinando su e giù.

DECAY con la manopola a 0 dà un "tic" di pochi millisecondi, perfetto per i suoni glitch; i primi scatti della manopola sono i più fini.

There are 6 tracks. Tap a track to select it, then pick its machine in the MACHINE row. Any track can use any machine: you can even have six different KICKs. Changing machine resets the knobs and clears that track's p-locks.

KICK, SNARE, METAL and PERC are two-operator FM voices; SYNTH is the melodic machine with four models; SAMPLE plays an audio file. Turn the knobs by dragging up and down.

With the knob at 0, DECAY gives a "tick" of a few milliseconds, perfect for glitchy sounds; the first steps of the knob are the finest.

SYNTH: i quattro modelliSYNTH: the four models

Con il motore SYNTH, accanto a MACHINE compaiono i tasti del modello. Cambiando modello PITCH, DELAY e REVERB restano, le altre manopole ripartono dai valori del modello.

FM2: la FM a due operatori (il vecchio TONE). I progetti salvati prima suonano identici.
FM4: quattro operatori collegati in 5 modi (ALGO), con feedback: e.piano, campane, bassi "growl", glitch.
CZ: phase distortion come i Casio CZ: l'onda viene "piegata", e DCW DEC fa l'effetto del filtro che si chiude.
MOD: modale, oggetti percossi (marimba, campana, metallo, vetro, tamburo).

With the SYNTH machine, the model buttons appear next to MACHINE. When you change model, PITCH, DELAY and REVERB stay; the other knobs restart from the model's values.

FM2: two-operator FM (the old TONE). Projects saved before sound exactly the same.
FM4: four operators wired in 5 ways (ALGO), with feedback: e-piano, bells, growl basses, glitches.
CZ: phase distortion like the Casio CZ: the wave gets "bent", and DCW DEC sounds like a filter closing.
MOD: modal, struck objects (marimba, bell, metal, glass, drum).

04Caricare i WAV (motore SAMPLE)Loading WAVs (SAMPLE machine)

Seleziona una traccia e scegli il motore SAMPLE.
Tocca CARICA WAV… e scegli un file (WAV, MP3, AIFF: tutto ciò che Chrome sa leggere).
Il nome compare sul display. Senza file, SAMPLE suona un accordo di esempio.

REGISTRA AL VOLO (ANDROID)

Sul telefono Android, toccando CARICA WAV… puoi anche scegliere di registrare un audio con il microfono: voce, un oggetto percosso, un giro di chitarra. Quando confermi, la registrazione finisce direttamente sulla traccia. Poi apri WAVE per tagliare l'inizio e la fine, e magari mettila in P-LOCK su step diversi. Se un formato non viene letto (il display mostra FILE NON LETTO), prova con un'altra app di registrazione.

I WAV caricati restano salvati anche quando chiudi PONY84, e finiscono dentro il file quando esporti il progetto.

Editor WAVE: start ed end sulla forma d'onda

Con il motore SAMPLE compare il tasto WAVE, che apre il campione disegnato per intero.

Trascina la maniglia S (START, bandierina in alto) e la maniglia E (END, bandierina in basso). Quando lasci, senti subito il risultato. Un tocco lontano dalle maniglie non sposta niente.
E prima di S = suono al contrario: la parte scelta diventa gialla con la scritta ◀ REVERSE.
Due dita per lo zoom (fino a 64×), un dito per scorrere quando sei ingrandito. Ci sono anche ZOOM + e ZOOM −.
AGGANCIO ZERO sposta il punto dove l'onda passa per lo zero, per non avere clic ai bordi. Spegnilo quando il clic lo vuoi, per i glitch.
Sotto la forma d'onda ci sono PITCH, DECAY, FILTER e GAIN, così non devi chiudere l'editor.
▶ ASCOLTA suona la porzione scelta. TUTTO IL FILE riporta START ed END agli estremi.
TRACCIA / STEP: scegli se le modifiche valgono per tutta la traccia o solo per lo step selezionato in P-LOCK. Un campione, tante fette diverse, anche al contrario su singoli step.
Su PC: frecce per spostare la maniglia (Maiusc = passi più grandi), S ed E per sceglierla, spazio per ascoltare.

Select a track and choose the SAMPLE machine.
Tap CARICA WAV… (load WAV) and pick a file (WAV, MP3, AIFF: anything Chrome can read).
Its name appears on the display. With no file, SAMPLE plays an example chord.

RECORD ON THE SPOT (ANDROID)

On an Android phone, tapping CARICA WAV… also lets you record audio with the microphone: your voice, something you hit, a guitar riff. When you confirm, the recording lands straight on the track. Then open WAVE to trim the start and end, and maybe p-lock it across different steps. If a format can't be read (the display shows FILE NON LETTO), try another recording app.

Loaded WAVs stay saved when you close PONY84, and go inside the file when you export the project.

WAVE editor: start and end on the waveform

With the SAMPLE machine a WAVE button appears, which opens the whole sample drawn out.

Drag the S handle (START, flag at the top) and the E handle (END, flag at the bottom). When you let go, you hear the result. A tap away from the handles moves nothing.
E before S = reversed sound: the selection turns yellow with ◀ REVERSE.
Two fingers to zoom (up to 64×), one finger to scroll when zoomed in. ZOOM + and ZOOM − are there too.
AGGANCIO ZERO (zero snap) moves the point to where the wave crosses zero, so the edges don't click. Turn it off when you want the click, for glitches.
PITCH, DECAY, FILTER and GAIN sit under the waveform, so you don't have to close the editor.
▶ ASCOLTA (listen) plays the selection. TUTTO IL FILE (whole file) resets START and END to the ends.
TRACCIA / STEP: choose whether changes apply to the whole track or only to the step selected in P-LOCK. One sample, many slices, even reversed on single steps.
On a computer: arrows move the handle (Shift = bigger steps), S and E pick it, space to listen.

05STEP: programmare il ritmoSTEP: programming beats

Con STEP attivo, i 16 tasti colorati sono i sedicesimi di una battuta della traccia selezionata. Tocca un tasto per accenderlo (LED rosso) o spegnerlo. A sequencer fermo, accendendo uno step senti subito il suono.

Sotto il numero dello step possono comparire tre indicazioni:

● lo step ha dei p-lock;
50%, 1:2… ha una condizione PROB;
+7, −2… ha una nota registrata con ROLL (semitoni rispetto all'intonazione della traccia).

With STEP active, the 16 coloured keys are the sixteenth notes of one bar of the selected track. Tap a key to turn it on (red LED) or off. While stopped, turning a step on plays its sound straight away.

Three markers can appear under the step number:

● the step has p-locks;
50%, 1:2… it has a PROB condition;
+7, −2… it has a note recorded with ROLL (semitones from the track's pitch).

06P-LOCK

I parameter lock danno a un singolo step valori diversi da quelli della traccia: una cassa più corta, un hi-hat più aperto, una nota diversa.

Premi P-LOCK.
Tocca uno step: si evidenzia (e si accende, se era spento).
Gira le manopole. Quelle bloccate hanno l'anello arancione e il valore in arancione.
Tocca un altro step per bloccarne altri, oppure lo stesso step per uscire.

TOGLI LOCK cancella tutti i lock dello step selezionato, comprese le note e l'intensità registrate con ROLL. Si bloccano le prime 6 manopole; DELAY e REVERB valgono per tutta la traccia.

Parameter locks give a single step values that differ from the track's: a shorter kick, a more open hi-hat, a different note.

Press P-LOCK.
Tap a step: it gets highlighted (and turned on, if it was off).
Turn the knobs. Locked knobs show an orange ring and an orange value.
Tap another step to lock more, or the same step to leave.

TOGLI LOCK (remove lock) clears every lock on the selected step, including notes and intensity recorded with ROLL. The first 6 knobs can be locked; DELAY and REVERB apply to the whole track.

07PROB

Decide quando suona uno step. Con PROB attivo, tocca uno step acceso per passare alla condizione successiva (uno step spento si accende al primo tocco). Rende i pattern vivi: le battute non sono mai tutte uguali.

Decides when a step plays. With PROB active, tap a lit step to move to the next condition (an unlit step turns on at the first tap). It keeps patterns alive: no two bars are quite the same.

08PATTERN

Ci sono 128 pattern: 8 banchi da A a H, ognuno con 16 pattern (da A01 a H16). La fila dei banchi sopra gli step è sempre visibile e mostra il banco in uso; toccando un banco passi direttamente in PATTERN. Scegli il banco, poi tocca uno dei 16 tasti per scegliere il pattern. Il LED acceso indica i pattern che contengono qualcosa, il puntino rosso sul banco indica che quel banco non è vuoto, il tasto contornato è il pattern in uso.

Toccando un pattern mentre suona, il cambio avviene a fine battuta (il tasto lampeggia in attesa).
SVUOTA cancella il pattern in uso.
Suoni, mixer ed effetti sono gli stessi per tutti i pattern; cambiano solo gli step.

Copiare un pattern (es. A01 su A02)

In PATTERN scegli A01 e premi COPIA.
Tocca A02 (o un pattern di un altro banco).
Premi INCOLLA. Se il pattern di destinazione non è vuoto, il tasto diventa CONFERMA?: toccalo di nuovo per sovrascrivere.

Durante la riproduzione INCOLLA scrive sul pattern in attesa (quello che lampeggia), così prepari il prossimo senza fermare la musica.

Copiare una sola traccia

In STEP il tasto diventa COPIA T1 (la traccia selezionata). Passa a un altro pattern, seleziona la traccia di destinazione e premi INCOLLA: utile per tenere la stessa cassa e cambiare il resto.

There are 128 patterns: 8 banks from A to H, each with 16 patterns (A01 to H16). The bank row above the steps is always visible and shows the current bank; tapping a bank takes you straight to PATTERN. Pick the bank, then tap one of the 16 keys to pick the pattern. A lit LED marks patterns that contain something, a red dot on a bank means it isn't empty, and the outlined key is the current pattern.

Picking a pattern while playing switches at the end of the bar (the key blinks while waiting).
SVUOTA (clear) empties the current pattern.
Sounds, mixer and effects are shared by all patterns; only the steps change.

Copying a pattern (e.g. A01 to A02)

In PATTERN pick A01 and press COPIA (copy).
Tap A02 (or a pattern in another bank).
Press INCOLLA (paste). If the destination isn't empty the button turns into CONFERMA? (confirm?): tap it again to overwrite.

While playing, INCOLLA writes to the queued pattern (the blinking one), so you can prepare the next one without stopping the music.

Copying a single track

In STEP the button becomes COPIA T1 (the selected track). Move to another pattern, select the destination track and press INCOLLA: handy for keeping the same kick and changing the rest.

10BPM e TAPBPM and TAP

Display: trascina il numero dei BPM verso l'alto o il basso (4 pixel = 1 BPM).
TAP: battilo a tempo almeno due volte; PONY84 fa la media degli ultimi tocchi. Dopo 2 secondi di pausa il conteggio riparte.

Display: drag the BPM number up or down (4 pixels = 1 BPM).
TAP: tap it in time at least twice; PONY84 averages the last taps. After a 2-second pause the count starts over.

11SCATTER

Effetti da performance sul mix: catturano un pezzo di audio e lo manipolano a tempo. Tieni premuto un pad per attivarlo e rilascia per tornare al suono normale. Con LATCH acceso un tocco lo attiva e un altro lo spegne.

Performance effects on the mix: they grab a slice of audio and twist it in time. Hold a pad to engage it and let go to return to the normal sound. With LATCH on, one tap turns it on and another turns it off.

12ROLL

La vista ROLL trasforma lo schermo in pad da suonare dal vivo.

KEYS e KIT

KEYS: i 16 pad sono note del motore della traccia scelta, dalla più bassa in basso a sinistra. SCALA sceglie la scala (minore, maggiore, dorica, pentatonica minore e maggiore, blues, cromatica), TONICA la nota di partenza, − OTT + l'ottava. I pad con il bordo arancione sono le toniche. Funziona con tutti i motori, anche con cassa e SAMPLE.
KIT: 6 pad grandi, uno per traccia, per suonare la batteria con le dita.

Intensità e ripetizione

Più in alto tocchi il pad, più forte suona.
RIPETI 1/8 1/16 1/32 1/16T: finché tieni premuto, la nota si ripete a tempo con il sequencer (o con i BPM, a sequencer fermo). OFF suona una sola volta.

Registrare

● REC fa partire il sequencer e scrive quello che suoni nel pattern in uso, sullo step più vicino, con nota e intensità. In KEYS registra sulla traccia selezionata, in KIT sulla traccia del pad.

The ROLL view turns the screen into pads for live playing.

KEYS and KIT

KEYS: the 16 pads are notes of the selected track's machine, lowest at bottom left. SCALA picks the scale (minor, major, dorian, minor and major pentatonic, blues, chromatic), TONICA the root note, − OTT + the octave. Pads with an orange border are root notes. It works with every machine, kick and SAMPLE included.
KIT: 6 big pads, one per track, for finger drumming.

Intensity and repeat

The higher you hit the pad, the louder it plays.
RIPETI (repeat) 1/8 1/16 1/32 1/16T: while you hold the pad, the note repeats in time with the sequencer (or with the BPM when stopped). OFF plays once.

Recording

● REC starts the sequencer and writes what you play into the current pattern, on the nearest step, with note and intensity. In KEYS it records on the selected track, in KIT on each pad's track.

13Mixer: canaliMixer: channels

Nella pagina CANALI ogni traccia ha la sua striscia:

uscita: il tasto sotto il nome sceglie dove va il canale, MAIN → BUS A → BUS B → BUS C;
PAN e DLY (mandata al delay, la stessa della manopola DELAY);
M mute e S solo;
fader del volume con VU meter.

In fondo ci sono il fader MASTER e il DRIVE finale.

On the CANALI (channels) page each track has its strip:

output: the button under the name chooses where the channel goes, MAIN → BUS A → BUS B → BUS C;
PAN and DLY (delay send, the same as the DELAY knob);
M mute and S solo;
volume fader with VU meter.

At the bottom are the MASTER fader and the final DRIVE.

Nella pagina BUS · FX trovi BUS A, BUS B, BUS C e MASTER. Ognuno ha 3 slot in serie: scegli l'effetto dal menu e regolalo con le sue 3 manopole. I bus hanno anche volume e mute, e mostrano quali tracce ricevono. Il MASTER lavora su tutto il mix, dopo lo scatter. Delay e riverbero globali restano mandate separate, condivise da tutte le tracce.

On the BUS · FX page you find BUS A, BUS B, BUS C and MASTER. Each has 3 slots in series: pick an effect from the menu and set it with its 3 knobs. Buses also have volume and mute, and show which tracks they receive. MASTER works on the whole mix, after the scatter. The global delay and reverb remain separate sends shared by all tracks.

Tocca il logo PONY84 ▾ per aprire PROGETTO & MIDI.

Salvataggio automatico: pattern, suoni, mixer, effetti, impostazioni di ROLL e WAV vengono salvati nel browser mezzo secondo dopo ogni modifica.
ESPORTA FILE: scarica un file .pony84 (cartella Download) con tutto il progetto, WAV compresi.
IMPORTA FILE: apre un file .pony84, anche creato su un altro dispositivo.
NUOVO VUOTO: tiene suoni ed effetti del demo, con tutti i pattern vuoti. NUOVO DA DEMO: ricarica il demo. Entrambi chiedono un secondo tocco per conferma.
SKIN: 808 (i colori della Roland) oppure SAD PONY GIRL (giallo, maschere rosa e display VHS). Cambia solo l’aspetto; la scelta resta salvata.

ATTENZIONE

Il salvataggio automatico vale per un browser su un dispositivo. In una scheda in incognito o cancellando i dati del sito il progetto si perde: esporta spesso i progetti a cui tieni.

Tap the PONY84 ▾ logo to open PROJECT & MIDI.

Autosave: patterns, sounds, mixer, effects, ROLL settings and WAVs are saved in the browser half a second after every change.
ESPORTA FILE (export): downloads a .pony84 file (Downloads folder) with the whole project, WAVs included.
IMPORTA FILE (import): opens a .pony84 file, even one made on another device.
NUOVO VUOTO (new empty): keeps the demo sounds and effects with all patterns empty. NUOVO DA DEMO (new from demo): reloads the demo. Both ask for a second tap to confirm.
SKIN: 808 (the Roland colours) or SAD PONY GIRL (yellow, pink masks and a VHS display). It only changes the look; your choice is remembered.

WATCH OUT

Autosave works for one browser on one device. In an incognito tab, or if you clear the site's data, the project is lost: export the projects you care about often.

16Controller MIDIMIDI controllers

Collega il controller via USB. Sul telefono Android serve un adattatore USB-C OTG.
Apri il menu PONY84 ▾ e tocca ATTIVA MIDI; consenti l'accesso quando Chrome lo chiede.
Sotto il tasto compare il nome del controller. Se lo colleghi dopo, tocca AGGIORNA MIDI.

Funziona subito con un Akai MPK Mini e con i controller che usano le stesse impostazioni di fabbrica:

Plug the controller in over USB. On an Android phone you need a USB-C OTG adapter.
Open the PONY84 ▾ menu and tap ATTIVA MIDI (enable MIDI); allow access when Chrome asks.
The controller's name appears below the button. If you plug it in later, tap AGGIORNA MIDI (refresh MIDI).

It works out of the box with an Akai MPK Mini and with controllers that use the same factory settings:

MIDI LEARN

Nel menu tocca MIDI LEARN: in alto compare una barra gialla e i controlli assegnabili hanno un bordo tratteggiato.
Tocca una manopola o un fader sullo schermo (anche quelle degli effetti dei bus).
Muovi una manopola o un fader del controller: è assegnato. Passa al successivo.
Premi FINE. Le assegnazioni restano salvate; AZZERA MAPPATURE le cancella.

Notes from the controller follow ROLL's repeat setting and are recorded by REC.

MIDI LEARN

In the menu tap MIDI LEARN: a yellow bar appears at the top and assignable controls get a dashed outline.
Tap a knob or fader on screen (bus effect knobs too).
Move a knob or fader on the controller: it's assigned. Move on to the next one.
Press FINE (done). Assignments stay saved; AZZERA MAPPATURE (reset mappings) clears them.

17Ableton Move

Una Ableton Move può diventare il controller di PONY84: i 16 tasti step programmano il ritmo, i 32 pad suonano, gli encoder girano le manopole e i LED mostrano tutto a colori. In questa modalità la Move non produce suono suo: suona PONY84. Funziona grazie a movewire, la libreria open source di Auri (Aureliano Bergese) che parla il protocollo con cui la Move dialoga con Ableton Live.

Chiudi Ableton Live (occupa le porte MIDI della Move) e collega la Move via USB-C al PC o al telefono Android (con adattatore OTG).
In Chrome o Edge apri il menu PONY84 ▾ e tocca COLLEGA MOVE.
Consenti l'accesso MIDI completo (SysEx) quando il browser lo chiede. Dopo un istante i LED si accendono e il menu mostra MOVE COLLEGATA.
Per finire tocca SCOLLEGA MOVE: la Move torna al suo funzionamento normale. Succede anche chiudendo la pagina.

An Ableton Move can become PONY84's controller: the 16 step buttons program the beat, the 32 pads play, the encoders turn the knobs and the LEDs show everything in colour. In this mode the Move makes no sound of its own: PONY84 does. It works thanks to movewire, the open-source library by Auri (Aureliano Bergese) that speaks the protocol the Move uses with Ableton Live.

Quit Ableton Live (it holds the Move's MIDI ports) and connect the Move over USB-C to a computer or an Android phone (with an OTG adapter).
In Chrome or Edge open the PONY84 ▾ menu and tap COLLEGA MOVE (connect Move).
Allow full MIDI access (SysEx) when the browser asks. After a moment the LEDs light up and the menu says MOVE COLLEGATA.
To finish tap SCOLLEGA MOVE (disconnect): the Move goes back to normal. Closing the page does the same.

Alla prima apertura il pattern A01 contiene un groove minimal techno a 126 BPM in Do minore, da smontare per capire come funziona tutto:

T1 KICK: cassa dritta, con un colpo in più a fine giro (4:4);
T2 PERC: rimshot sincopato con probabilità;
T3 METAL: hi-hat in levare; T4 METAL: shaker leggero;
T5 SYNTH (FM2): basso dub con note registrate e condizioni, in sidechain sulla cassa (BUS B);
T6 SAMPLE: accordo Cm7 con delay, riverbero e un filtro che respira (BUS C).

On first launch pattern A01 holds a 126 BPM minimal techno groove in C minor, ready to take apart to see how everything works:

T2 PERC: syncopated rimshot with probability;
